Alone Time or the Isolation of Depression?
Isolation is a common part of depression, caused by changes in the brain and emotional coping behaviors. Depression reduces dopamine, making socializing feel unrewarding, while an overactive amygdala makes interactions feel overwhelming and stressful. Negative self-perceptions and emotional numbness further drive withdrawal, as people avoid social situations due to feelings of unworthiness or disconnection. Unlike normal periods of solitude, isolation in depression is persistent and deepens feelings of loneliness, worsening symptoms over time.
